Nice to see Arlene Bynon will fill the 1-2pm spot daily on 640. That's a nice option for that slot. 3 hours of Jim Richards on 1010 is about 90 minutes too long.

Green Room :: Hamilton Pan-Am stadium ... or not?

Subject: Hamilton Pan-Am stadium ... or not?
Posted: Fri Aug 13, 2010 4:23 pm (GMT -4)
Topic Replies: 0

Does this story sound familiar? From about 5 years ago?

A Canadian bid for a moderate (not Olympics) international sports festival is successful. It involves all three levels of government putting money towards a new stadium in the golden horseshoe/GTA region of southern Ontario, to be used for soccer during this sports festival. The government money is enough to fund a large percentage of the stadium's construction (very approximately 65 to 85 per cent), but not all of it. Quite reasonably, it is expected that a CFL team who will use the stadium permanently for many years after the brief one-time international sports-fest is over, will pay for the rest. To most it would really appear to be government largely giving the CFL team a new stadium.

The CFL team goes along with the idea for a while, then just before the time comes when they have to actually sign on and commit to putting their part of the money on the table, they back out.

http://www.cbc.ca/sports/story/2005/04/22/argosstadium050422.html

Though perhaps not directly stated in either of the two situations, it appears as though the consistently money-losing CFL team may not be able to afford the approximately 20 million dollars required (regardless of the wealth of the individual owners from their other separate businesses). And perhaps somewhat arrogantly they believe that the stadium can't be built without them, or if it does get built it will be sitting empty and after 2 or 3 years the city will be begging for the CFL team to use the new tenant-less stadium.

But what happens? Another private partner steps forward to take the place of the CFL team in the deal to build the new stadium, and the CFL team is left out in the cold through no one's fault but their own. In Toronto it was Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment Limited, and what would become their Major League Soccer team, Toronto FC. In Hamilton it may be the Katz Group, as in billionaire Daryl Katz who already owns the Edmonton Oilers, perhaps in league with the Anschutz Entertainment Group, a very large company with many sports and entertainment interests.
-------------------

Quote:

Katz Group represent intriguing option if Cats bail: councillor

...Katz Group executive Patrick Laforge visited Hamilton earlier this summer to begin the process of negotiating a memorandum of agreement... managing Copps Coliseum and possibly a west harbour stadium with both football and a pro soccer team.

...AEG would be interested in entertainment opportunities at Copps and the stadium.

... the company has also expressed interest in finding "major tenants" for the stadium.

------------------

And while a few silly bloggers dependent on the CFL (*ahem* TSN) incoherently try to pretend there is somewhere else for the TiCats to move (no one has, or is going to build, a stadium for them) and vent their anger at Hamilton's mayor and city council for refusing to cave in to the unrealistic demands of Tiger-Cats owner Bob Young, other comments I've read have said some interesting things about the situation and the way the CFL works.

The CFL's collective bargaining agreement expired after the 2009 season. Some expected the always money-losing league was about to significantly decrease the $4.2 million a year salary cap, with a strike by the players perhaps possible but eventually not succeeding in accomplishing anything since the players have no where else to go. The league that had existed in Europe and the Arena League in the U.S. had both gone out of business. The new Arena Football League pays its players $400 a game (plus three players per team getting $1000 per game). For the CFL, if you divide the $4.2 million by 46 players and 18 games, that's approximately $5000 per player per game.

Yet the CFL strangely announced its new CBA was actually raising the salary cap by small increments over the next few years. Nothing personal against the CFL players, but these are guys not good enough to make the NFL. There is certainly no shortage of recent college players eager to play professional football for far less than $5000 a game. The point is that there is no reason for the CFL to be paying its players that much, particularly with Bob Young and presumably other owners constantly crying poor as though they are somehow helpless to do anything about the way they run their own business.

And their preposterous answer seems to involve getting governments to give them new stadiums in Winnipeg, Ottawa and Hamilton that the CFL teams control, complete with other ancillary businesses attached (parking, condos, retail) to the stadium to earn profits to fund the money losing team. That explains Young's contention that he needs a suburban stadium, and lots of room around for parking and likely other things, and not the downtown site chosen by the city.

Unless they were afraid of a potential players strike, I have no idea why the CFL would have chosen that strange route rather than reducing the salary cap as most expected, which presumably could have immediately moved all teams into profitability without the other pie-in-the-sky arrangements. If Saskatchewan makes money now, and wanted to avoid a strike, do they understand that greatly reducing the cap would mean that they would make even more money? And the CFL continuing to rely on owners willing to lose money in Toronto, Hamilton, etc., is not something that's going to last forever.

Mike Bullard is subbing for Jim Richards on 1010 for 2 weeks. I like Jimberly's sense of humour, but on serious news topics he rambles and sounds frankly unprepared. I like Bullard's deadpan humour, and he just comes across as more up to speed on current events, to these ears anyway. What do the ones and twos of you out there say: Richards or Bullard?

CHAM 820 AM, the Astral-owned Hamilton station that had been "Talk 820", changed its format to country music at noon on Thursday.
This Hamilton Spectator article mentions the possibility of Mike Bullard moving to CFRB, also owned by Astral.
Too bad he's not a sports guy, as Fan590 seems to have several positions available after firing a bunch of on-air personalities without permanent replacements lined up.

Happy birthday,

You're 5 today.

The site has been registered for the next 5 years, and, in the spirit of the site's roots, we're looking for a format change.

The real talk radio scene is on satellite radio these days. National celebrity guests, belly rolling comedy, and now The Mel Gibson tapes -- why bother hearing them censored ?

For serious talk fans, local talk radio has been relegated to snow days and weekend mornings (Renovations Cross Canada and Stafford replays for the win).

CBC and Howard Stern have demonstrated that national talk radio should rule the airwaves. Subscription radio exists today because some things worth listening to are also worth a financial cost. The channel choices and minimal commercial breaks are close to priceless for the captive radio audience.

Local talk jocks in Toronto come and go. There's just no way to reach critical mass with this city's finicky, distracted audience.

If you ask me, the AM system should be retired completely.

Since I'm actually living in Toronto now, I've been feeling a lot more connected to the issues in this city ($60 car tax, WTF ?!?!?!).

might have planted its roots in talk radio, but down-to-earth talk about the serious issues in our city sure sounds like something I can really sink my teeth into.

I'm pretty much done with Toronto talk tardio. It's a shit show (sadly, not the one hosted by celebrity Andy Dick).

To paraphrase Jean Chretien, we have a lot to do here. Maybe we can find a way to force open-source democracy on this city before our leaders find a few more sacks (stuffed with 50 million dollars, perhaps ?) behind their couch.

Look for the new soon and remember to join the talk about our celebrated home, Toronto.

I suppose it was bound to happen, but I hear him pushing all kinds of crap now. Unfortunately, he was correct, his credibility does suffer, but I'm sure that doesn't matter to his superiors as much as their bottom line.
