One of George W. Bush's oddest moments was declaring that he wanted NASA to build manned space stations on the Moon and then build a rocket there to take Americans to Mars.
All of this was possible in short order, he declared, all while his army was embroiled in two major wars on the other side of the world.
In a Kennedy-esque way, this sort of declaration might make a lot more sense coming from Obama -- perhaps only after he takes America out of at least one of those pesky wars.
What say you ? Should we be planning to visit another planet, while the home planet is in jeopardy on many fronts ? _________________ Regards,

| With the capabilities of unmanned probes making such huge progress, the arguments in favour of taking the enormous risk and expense of sending people to Mars becomes increasingly less valid. Unmanned missions in the next few years will return soil and rock samples, and land a large roving laboratory on the surface. |

It looks like a manned mission to Mars won't happen any time in the foreseeable future. Even the plan of returning to the moon by 2020 has been deemed too expensive. The entire Constellation project, including the Apollo-like Orion capsule, is probably about to be cancelled, with NASA getting "out of the business of flying people to low-Earth orbit", while continuing to pay Russia or perhaps commercial interests to launch people to the International Space Station.
